5 Flutter UI Tips That Make Your App Feel Premium

Small changes with a big effect: a spacing system, a proper theme, implicit animations, Hero transitions and haptic feedback.

Clients often ask me why one app "feels expensive" and another doesn't, even when both have the same features. Usually it's not one big thing. It's a handful of small details done consistently. Here are five I use in every project.

1. Use a spacing scale, not random numbers

Random paddings (13, 17, 22โ€ฆ) make a screen feel messy without anyone knowing why. Pick a scale and stick to it:

class Gap {
  static const xs = 4.0;
  static const sm = 8.0;
  static const md = 16.0;
  static const lg = 24.0;
  static const xl = 32.0;
}

// Usage
const SizedBox(height: Gap.md);
Padding(padding: const EdgeInsets.all(Gap.lg), child: ...);

2. Build your colors from one seed

Material 3 can generate a full, harmonious color scheme from a single brand color, including a dark mode:

MaterialApp(
  theme: ThemeData(
    useMaterial3: true,
    colorScheme: ColorScheme.fromSeed(seedColor: const Color(0xFF1E6BFF)),
  ),
  darkTheme: ThemeData(
    useMaterial3: true,
    colorScheme: ColorScheme.fromSeed(
      seedColor: const Color(0xFF1E6BFF),
      brightness: Brightness.dark,
    ),
  ),
);

Then use Theme.of(context).colorScheme.primary instead of hard-coded colors, and your whole app stays consistent.

3. Animate changes with implicit animations

Things that jump feel cheap; things that move feel polished. Flutter's implicit animations need no controller:

final scheme = Theme.of(context).colorScheme;

AnimatedContainer(
  duration: const Duration(milliseconds: 250),
  curve: Curves.easeOut,
  padding: EdgeInsets.all(selected ? 20 : 14),
  decoration: BoxDecoration(
    color: selected ? scheme.primary : scheme.surfaceContainerHighest,
    borderRadius: BorderRadius.circular(selected ? 20 : 12),
  ),
  child: child,
);

For swapping widgets (an icon, a number, a whole card), wrap them in AnimatedSwitcher and give each version a different key.

4. Connect screens with Hero

When a user taps a product image and it flies into the details page, the app suddenly feels native and high-end. It's two lines:

// List screen
Hero(tag: 'product-${product.id}', child: Image.network(product.image));

// Details screen
Hero(tag: 'product-${product.id}', child: Image.network(product.image));

Same tag on both screens. Flutter handles the animation.

5. Add a tiny bit of haptic feedback

A light vibration on important taps (like, add to cart, pull to refresh) makes the app feel physical:

import 'package:flutter/services.dart';

onPressed: () {
  HapticFeedback.lightImpact();
  addToCart(product);
},

Use it sparingly: only on actions that matter.

Bonus: respect the safe area

Wrap screens in SafeArea (or use MediaQuery.paddingOf(context)) so content never hides under notches and home indicators. Nothing looks less premium than a button cut off by the iPhone's home bar.
